Video footage shows the white van driving recklessly, colliding with vehicles on the wrong side of the road. One clip captures the van hitting a person on the ground, then reversing before being approached by emergency services.
Another video depicts police cars blocking the van’s escape, with individuals breaking into the vehicle to apprehend the driver. Reports on social media suggest that the lorry driver attempted to breach a police blockade, resulting in police firing at the vehicle. The driver fled, striking pedestrians, including a person on an electric bike.
Gangkou, located in Guangdong province, a bustling commerce hub in southern China, witnessed public outrage towards the lorry driver’s actions. Social media users drew parallels to a tragic incident in Zhuhai, where a motorist killed 38 people and injured 48 by driving into a crowd at a sports center in November 2024.
During the Zhuhai incident, witnesses described bodies scattered at the sports center as bystanders rushed to aid the injured before emergency services arrived. The police confirmed that the driver, Fan Weiqiu, dissatisfied with a divorce settlement, intentionally struck pedestrians and later attempted suicide.
