Language Error Leads to Tragic Bungee Jump Death

A tragic incident occurred during a bungee jump in Spain, where a 17-year-old girl, Vera Mol from the Netherlands, lost her life due to a miscommunication by an instructor with poor English skills. The fatal accident took place in August 2015 near Cabezón de la Sal, Cantabria, as Vera leaped from a bridge without her safety rope being properly secured.

Vera Mol, part of a group of Dutch and Belgian teenagers, was the second-last to jump and inexperienced in bungee jumping. The confusion arose when the instructor mistakenly shouted “no jump,” which Vera may have misunderstood as “now jump,” leading to the tragic outcome.

The court highlighted the critical role of language confusion in the accident, emphasizing the instructor’s inadequate English proficiency, described as “very bad.” The instructor, along with the bungee jumping company’s director, faced legal action for negligent homicide following Vera’s death.

Flowtrack, the company operating the bungee jumping site, acknowledged the accident, attributing it to a misunderstanding in instructions that left Vera unsecured to the bridge before her fatal jump. In addition to the language issue, the court revealed a series of safety lapses, including the failure to attach Vera to a safety line during the ascent and inadequate waiting conditions for the group.

Furthermore, the adventure company neglected to verify Vera’s age, as she was under 18 and legally ineligible to participate without parental consent. Vera’s family has since advocated for stricter safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
