Jurors were presented with an audio recording of Duane (Keffe D) Davis recounting a 2008 police interview where he stated that his nephew, Orlando (Baby Lane) Anderson, was the one who fired the shots that killed rapper Tupac Shakur. Davis, who claimed to be in the car with Anderson during the incident, is facing allegations of masterminding the 1996 murder of the 25-year-old hip-hop icon in Las Vegas. Interestingly, at the time of the interview, Anderson had already passed away for ten years.
According to Davis’s account to the Los Angeles police, the white Cadillac he and Anderson were traveling in, along with two other individuals, pulled up beside a vehicle carrying Shakur and Death Row Records head, Marion (Suge) Knight. Davis expressed his readiness to retaliate had the circumstances been different but passed the gun to Deandre “Big Dre” Smith as Knight’s car was on the opposite side. However, Smith declined the weapon, leading to Anderson taking it and initiating the gunfire, as described by Davis.
The courtroom observed jurors attentively listening to the audio recording, with some taking notes while Davis and his lawyer exchanged hushed conversations. Shakur’s family maintained a composed demeanor, occasionally glancing at the screen or lowering their gaze. This marked the first time Davis openly discussed his involvement in the crime with authorities, a pivotal piece of evidence in the state’s case against the 63-year-old. Prosecutors emphasized their reliance on Davis’s own confessions during police interviews and in his 2019 co-authored memoir, “Compton Street Legend.”
Despite pleading not guilty, Davis’s attorney discredited the prosecution’s version of events as fictional and labeled Davis’s accounts as unreliable. The defense argued that investigators failed to substantiate Davis’s claims with concrete evidence. Notably, the Los Angeles police initially brought Davis in for questioning regarding the 1997 shooting death of Shakur’s rival, the Notorious B.I.G., although he was eventually cleared of involvement in that case.
In a twist, prosecutors challenged the confidentiality of Davis’s statements, asserting that his subsequent public disclosures invalidated any prior agreements with law enforcement. They alleged that Shakur’s murder was in retaliation for an earlier altercation where Shakur’s entourage reportedly assaulted Anderson, Davis’s nephew, at the MGM Grand following a Mike Tyson fight. Davis, who attended the fight but not the altercation, recounted seeing Shakur hanging out of a black BMW later that evening, just before the fatal shots were fired by Anderson.
