I Am Maximus made history by winning the Randox Grand National at Aintree, following in the footsteps of the iconic Red Rum. The heavily favored horse secured victory with odds of 8-1, resulting in a significant payout of £800,000 for a fortunate bettor who wagered £100,000 at the racecourse betting ring.
Trained by Willie Mullins, I Am Maximus had previously triumphed in 2024 and finished as the runner-up the year before. The remarkable feat of reclaiming the Grand National title had not been achieved since Red Rum’s back-to-back victories in 1977.
In a thrilling race, I Am Maximus overtook Jordans near the finish line to secure the win under jockey Paul Townend. The victory also marked a one-two-four finish for horses owned by JP McManus, with Iroko taking second place and Johnnywho coming in third.
With this win, Mullins claimed his third consecutive Grand National victory, placing him alongside legendary trainers Ginger McCain and Fred Rimell as the most successful trainers in the event’s history. Townend credited the use of cheekpieces for aiding in the mid-race performance of I Am Maximus.
Despite having multiple options, Townend chose to ride I Am Maximus over Grangeclare West, who fell at the first fence. McManus expressed delight in the horse’s performance and stated his satisfaction with the decision to target the National race.
Reflecting on the accomplishment, McManus acknowledged the horse’s resilience and suitability for the National course. The winning owner also hinted at future ambitions to continue pursuing success in the prestigious event.
The Grand National saw some early exits, including Panic Attack, but I Am Maximus emerged victorious, solidifying his status as a standout performer in the racing world.
