“Former Home Secretary Suella Braverman Joins Reform Amid Controversy”

Suella Braverman has switched allegiance to Reform, carrying a significant amount of controversial history with her.

The former Home Secretary has been at the center of attention for years due to a series of tough, offensive, and questionable remarks. She faced dismissal from the Home Office twice, once for breaching the ministerial code.

Braverman has joined forces with Nigel Farage’s party alongside former colleague Robert Jenrick, citing Britain as “broken.” However, she conveniently overlooks her involvement in the previous four Tory administrations that she now criticizes.

Highlighted below are some of her notable controversial instances, ranging from clashes with Elton John to controversial statements about the homeless and migrants.

During her tenure as Home Secretary, Braverman faced backlash for expressing her desire to see asylum seekers deported under the failed Rwanda initiative. This comment, made at a Conservative Party event in 2022, stirred widespread condemnation for trivializing the asylum seeker’s plight.

Her tumultuous term as Home Secretary concluded abruptly when she sent an official document from a personal email to a Tory backbencher, leading to her dismissal for violating the ministerial code in October 2022 under Liz Truss’s leadership. Despite this, she was reinstated by Rishi Sunak shortly after, despite her promise of a government characterized by integrity and professionalism.

Braverman’s tenure was cut short in 2023 by Rishi Sunak following a controversial article she penned for The Times, where she criticized police chiefs for favoritism towards pro-Palestinian marches. The backlash from her article raised concerns about her compliance with ministerial regulations.

She sparked outrage by labeling homelessness as a “lifestyle choice” and advocated for a crackdown on individuals living in tents on the streets, proposing fines for charities assisting such individuals.

Braverman, referred to as “Speedy Sue,” faced accusations of seeking preferential treatment after being caught speeding and requesting enrollment in a private speed awareness course through civil servants.

Her inflammatory rhetoric on asylum seekers, including referring to them as part of an “invasion,” drew criticism for aligning with far-right language, especially following an incident involving explosive devices at a migrant processing center in Dover.

In her contentious remarks, Braverman singled out British-Pakistani men concerning grooming gangs, contrary to official Home Office findings that white men under 30 were more common in cases of child sexual exploitation.

Her contentious statements extended to questioning UN protections for refugees and advocating for stricter entry criteria for LGBT refugees, sparking widespread condemnation for undermining asylum claims based on sexual orientation.

Despite being linked to a documented incident involving 12 refugees killed at a protest in Rwanda, Braverman denied knowledge of the event, raising questions about her awareness and responsibility as Home Secretary.
