Escape to the Country’s Jules Hudson quickly spotted a significant problem just minutes into revisiting a couple’s dream home, which they had first seen on the show a few months prior.
In Tuesday’s (January 7) episode of the BBC spin-off I Escaped to the Country, Jules returned to Bedfordshire to catch up with William and Carol.
The couple had previously fallen head over heels for a thatched cottage believed to be around 400 years old. One of its selling points was a large, fully tiled shower room on the ground floor.
However, less than a year later, during Jules’ visit, he noticed a major change in the house that came with a big issue.
Upon entering a bedroom, Jules realised something was different when William disclosed that it used to be the bathroom, reports the Express.
He asked: “So, you remember the bathroom?” A shocked Jules responded: “I do now, yes.”
William elaborated: “It’s now a bedroom with a bathroom en-suite.” As they looked at the walls, Carol said, “The delightful gentleman who comes to do the building work allows William to help.”
It was evident that William had been hands-on with the renovation, but it hadn’t been smooth sailing. He admitted: “I’ve learned some new skills doing it, but I might draw on your expertise in woodcraft to make a curved skirting board.”
Looking down at the floor, Jules noticed a problem with the skirting board. He picked up the wood and remarked, “We haven’t staged this. I’ve just spotted this. I can see where you’re going with it but I can definitely give you some top tips.”
The couple later shared that they snagged the property for £750,000, well under their £900,000 budget, leaving them with a substantial sum to put towards renovations.
Carol expressed her satisfaction: “We have had a nice amount of money to spend on the place.”
William disclosed their future plans: “We’ve also got plans to extend at the back to build a utility room on the back or a dog room and word on that should start in a week’s time.”
