England Rugby Stands by Captain Maro Itoje after Mother’s Passing

England’s national rugby team has pledged their full support to their captain, Maro Itoje, following the recent passing of his mother, Florence. Itoje confirmed the sad news of his mother’s demise in December and has traveled to Nigeria for her funeral.

The 31-year-old player opted to miss Saracens’ Premiership match against Newcastle to be with his family in Nigeria. Additionally, he was absent from the Six Nations launch in Edinburgh, with his friend Jamie George stepping in for media obligations.

George empathetically shared his own experience of losing his mother during the Six Nations in 2024, expressing deep understanding of Itoje’s grief. He emphasized the importance of allowing Itoje the necessary time to mourn and process his loss before returning to the team fully prepared.

As England prepares for their upcoming match against Wales at Twickenham on February 7, they are currently in Girona for a warm-weather training camp. Itoje is expected to join his teammates in Spain after bidding farewell to his mother. Head coach Steve Borthwick expressed confidence in Itoje’s readiness for the tournament.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Itoje paid tribute to his late mother, highlighting her significant impact on his life and expressing his gratitude for being her son. He acknowledged the profound void her passing has left in their family and found solace in his faith that she is now watching over them from above.

Borthwick acknowledged the emotional toll the loss has taken on Itoje and emphasized the significance of this time in Nigeria for him and his loved ones. He praised Itoje’s leadership qualities and looked forward to his return to the team.

Throughout this challenging period, the England rugby team remains steadfast in their support for Itoje as he navigates this personal tragedy.
