Thousands of supporters of former President Donald Trump gathered in Texas this week for the annual CPAC USA event, which is considered the premier convention for the American right. This year, the event was moved from its traditional location near Washington DC to a resort in Dallas, Texas, by organizer Matt Schlapp.
The venue for the event was described as massive, resembling the scale of Disney World in Texas. The resort featured an impressive atrium under a dome, creating a surreal atmosphere reminiscent of a western town with model railways, fountains, and rivers. Attendees seemed content to stay within the confines of the resort, enjoying the unique surroundings.
Despite expectations, Donald Trump did not make an appearance at the event, leaving many attendees disappointed. Rumors of Senator Ted Cruz making a grand entrance by parachute were dismissed, highlighting the anticipation surrounding the event.
Another unusual aspect of this year’s CPAC was the significant presence of Iranian attendees, particularly Shah Restorationists, possibly to avoid any division within the movement regarding Trump’s stance on Iran. The absence of key figures like Liz Truss and Nigel Farage was noted, with Truss positioning herself as a leader of a new movement called “MEGA – Make England Great Again.”
Additionally, there was a growing interest among attendees in British political figures like Stephen Yaxley-Lennon and Rupert Lowe, indicating a shift in preferences within the conservative audience. The atmosphere at CPAC seemed more radicalized this year, with the January 6th rioters being praised as heroes, reflecting a changing sentiment among the attendees.
Despite the unusual occurrences and controversies, the event maintained some familiar aspects, such as the rowdy Australian reception and the ongoing support for Trump among his loyal followers. Liz Truss was reportedly still present at the event, adding to the intrigue surrounding the gathering.
