El Chapo, the infamous drug lord, is reportedly experiencing concerning changes while in solitary confinement at a high-security prison in the United States, according to his former attorney. Mariel Colón, who previously represented the ex-leader of the violent Sinaloa Cartel, expressed worries about El Chapo’s mental well-being at ADX Florence in Colorado, where he is currently held. Joaquín Guzmán, known as El Chapo, was apprehended for the last time in Mexico in 2016 before being extradited to the US.
During a recent interview, Ms. Colón highlighted the increasingly severe conditions of El Chapo’s confinement, noting troubling alterations in the 68-year-old’s behavior. She pointed out that the lack of human interaction and absence of external stimuli are taking a toll on his mental state. The lawyer criticized the inhumane treatment, stating that El Chapo is confined to his cell 24/7 without any social interaction or exposure to sunlight.
According to Ms. Colón, El Chapo is restricted from utilizing the prison library, engaging in work activities, or interacting with other inmates or guards. His meals are delivered through a small opening in the door, and he is confined within the four walls of his cell, with minimal human contact except when meeting with his legal counsel while handcuffed.
US authorities are reportedly maintaining strict control over El Chapo due to his history of escaping detention. He is allowed only three hours of outdoor time per week, and his communications and visits are closely monitored. El Chapo has filed multiple requests with the court to ease these restrictions following his convictions for criminal enterprise, money laundering conspiracy, and drug trafficking.
The Mirror has sought a response from the Federal Bureau of Prisons regarding these allegations.
