Co-op has revealed plans to open 18 new or revamped stores within the first quarter of 2026.
The inaugural Co-op store for 2026 is set to launch in the upcoming Willowbrook Park neighborhood in Didcot, Oxfordshire.
In addition to the new store openings, some existing locations will undergo renovations, such as the convenience store in Eastern Green, Coventry, and a franchise-operated store in Ealing, London.
Kate McCrae, Co-op’s Operations Director, emphasized the company’s focus on establishing local stores that serve as community hubs rather than just retail outlets.
She highlighted the stores’ emphasis on quality products, value for members and customers, and a wide range of promotions to cater to shoppers’ preferences.
McCrae expressed excitement about the brand’s expansion plans for 2026, aiming to reinforce Co-op’s presence in various UK high streets and communities.
Following this announcement, Co-op also disclosed intentions to introduce thousands of new apprenticeships in the coming years.
The retail chain outlined a £70 million commitment through its Levy Share service to generate 7,000 apprenticeships by 2030 by allowing levy-paying employers to transfer unused apprenticeship levy funds.
Since its launch four years ago, the initiative has successfully matched over 3,800 apprenticeships, with a significant portion benefiting the most deprived communities and the care sector.
Claire Costello, Co-op’s chief people and inclusion officer, underscored the impact of the Co-op Levy Share program in leveraging untapped resources to create valuable apprenticeship opportunities.
She noted that the company’s collaboration with contributing partners has already directed £40 million towards transformative apprenticeships and pledged an additional £70 million to support 7,000 apprenticeships by 2030.
Co-op urged for the collection of socioeconomic background data for apprenticeships to ensure inclusivity and prevent certain groups from being marginalized within the system.
