“China and Russia to Build Moon Nuclear Facility for Research”

China has introduced a groundbreaking initiative to collaborate with Russia in constructing a nuclear facility on the moon to support a research outpost. This development coincides with China’s recent launch of three astronauts to the Tiangong space station. The ambitious Chang’e-8 mission aims to test resource utilization technologies at the moon’s south pole, with plans to establish the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) by around 2028. The mission will involve innovative techniques such as 3D printing using lunar soil and deploying robotics for exploration purposes.

Russia’s space agency, Roscosmos, has expressed intentions to partner with China’s National Space Administration (CNSA) to deploy a nuclear reactor on the moon by 2035 to power the ILRS. The inclusion of this nuclear power unit in discussions among ILRS member countries suggests growing support for the idea. Wu Weiren, chief designer of China’s lunar exploration program, highlighted the importance of power supply for the ILRS and acknowledged Russia’s expertise in nuclear technology for space applications.

China’s lunar outpost plans align with NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to return US astronauts to the moon by December 2025. The country is also launching the “555 Project,” inviting numerous countries and scientific institutions to participate in the ILRS. Collaboration between Roscosmos and CNSA has seen increased interest following recent geopolitical events, with potential joint endeavors in mineral exploration and utilization of lunar resources for fuel.

China’s significant technological progress and space achievements, coupled with Western sanctions limiting Russia’s access to space technology, position China to support Russia in advancing satellite launches, lunar exploration, and space station missions. This strategic partnership is seen as a way to facilitate innovation and progress in space exploration for both countries.
