“Centenarian Employee’s Remarkable 84-Year Career Legacy”

On average, workers in the UK tend to switch jobs approximately every five years, although older employees often exhibit greater loyalty. Walter Orthmann, however, stood out from the norm. Hired as a temporary worker at the age of 15, he remained with the same company well past his 100th birthday.

Given the prevalence of layoffs, with around 45% of individuals experiencing redundancy at some point in their careers, Walter shared his secret to retaining his job for 84 years.

According to Orthamnn, the key is to “maintain curiosity, continuously learn, and genuinely pursue your passion.”

He advised others to prioritize their diet, sleep, and stress management, emphasizing the importance of staying calm, approaching tasks with humor, and focusing on enjoyable activities. Walter expressed his fondness for his work at the company and his past enjoyment of business travel, underscoring how engaging in activities one loves makes time fly.

“Avoid creating adversaries,” he recommended. “Seek reconciliation. Embrace a peaceful existence. Life is transient on Earth, so savor it and pursue your desires.”

Elaborating on his life philosophy, Walter remarked, ”I don’t engage in extensive planning or dwell on the future. My focus lies in awakening each day, exercising, and heading to work; being present in the moment is paramount. Let’s get to work!”

As Walter marked his centennial birthday, his colleagues acknowledged his remarkable versatility. Throughout his eight decades with the textile company ReneauxView, Walter adeptly navigated various roles, including accounting, global supply chains, and enterprise software.

Many of Walter’s younger coworkers regarded him as a valuable mentor who offered guidance through leading by example and attentive listening. Company executives praised his kindness and supportive nature, acknowledging that his employment had never been in question.

Born in Brazil to German parents in 1922, Walter excelled academically but left school at 15 to assist his family financially.

Hired as a packing assistant on January 17, 1938, Walter progressed to a sales role shortly after joining the company and later advanced to become a successful Sales Manager.

Brazil’s stringent labor regulations partly facilitated Walter’s enduring tenure. The country’s public pension system sets specific retirement ages and contribution mandates but does not mandate cessation of work upon receiving a pension, except in the public sector where civil servants must retire by age 75.

Walter passed away at 102 in August 2024, having never opted to retire.
