“Celebrities Face Unscripted Questions in CBC’s ‘The Assembly’ Season 2”

CBC’s reality show, The Assembly, is back for its second season, featuring six fresh celebrity interviews and a larger cast of over 30 neurodivergent and autistic adults who will be posing the questions this time around.

Among the celebrity guests facing the heat are actors Hudson Williams (Heated Rivalry), Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover), and Jay Baruchel (This is the End). The six-episode season also includes notable figures such as actor and Miss Universe Canada Ashley Callingbull (North of North), singer-songwriter Lights, and three-time Olympic hockey gold medallist Marie-Philip Poulin.

Each celebrity undergoes an in-depth interview where they are asked direct and unexpected questions that go beyond the usual promotional discourse, often delving into personal matters. This unscripted format fosters candid interactions, awkward pauses, humor, and genuine connections, making The Assembly a unique and engaging watch.

The show’s concept is inspired by the French program Les Rencontres du Papotin, which premiered in 2022 with guests like Killing Eve star Camille Cottin and French President Emmanuel Macron. This format has since gained international recognition, featuring renowned personalities such as actors Antonio Banderas, Michael Sheen, David Tennant, and Stephen Fry.

The inaugural season of CBC’s The Assembly was lauded with accolades including a Canadian Screen Award for best direction, three Telly Awards, and a Golden Sheaf Award at the Yorkton Film Festival, with a Banff Rockie Award nomination.

According to CBC’s Jennifer Dettman, executive director of unscripted content, the positive reception of the first season demonstrated a strong audience interest in the interviewers’ “fresh, honest energy.” Executive producers Stephen Sawchuk and Sean De Vries promise that the new season will continue to deliver the show’s essence of heart, humor, and authentic dialogues, resonating with viewers seeking genuine human connections.

Produced by Vancouver-based Small Army Entertainment, The Assembly Season 2 premieres on Sunday, November 1, at 9 p.m. ET on CBC TV and CBC Gem. Exclusive “producer’s cuts” will be available on CBC Gem starting at 9 a.m. ET on the same day.
