“Buzz Bingo Reports First Admissions and Sales Growth in 20 Years”

Bingo is experiencing a potential resurgence as a prominent operator reported the first increase in both admissions and sales in nearly two decades. Buzz Bingo, operating 77 clubs nationwide, saw a 2.5% growth last year, with a 5% rise in the second half, marking the first simultaneous increase in admissions and revenues since 2007.

Dominic Mansour, the CEO, expressed enthusiasm, stating, “Bingo is enjoying a real resurgence across the UK.” The game, introduced from the US in the 1950s, gained popularity in the 1960s when numerous grand cinemas were transformed into bingo halls.

In the 1980s, attendance dwindled as the National Lottery emerged in 1994, providing another entertainment option for players. Operators have made efforts to reverse this trend by incorporating new technologies and transforming bingo nights into vibrant events, with recent reports suggesting a renaissance in the industry.

While some sources indicated a surge in younger players, the number of bingo halls decreased from 335 before Covid to approximately 247 presently. Collectively, the country’s bingo clubs generate around £35 million in annual profits, with a significant portion affected by economic factors like the 2024 Autumn Budget and national insurance and wage increases.

Buzz Bingo has witnessed a decline in the number of sites, dropping from 137 pre-pandemic, with admissions still below previous levels. Despite challenges, the company boasts over a million members and welcomes nearly 100,000 players weekly. Mansour attributed the resurgence to technological advancements and club refurbishments, noting a 20% rise in admissions and a 50% increase in new customers at renovated sites.

Anticipating further growth in the coming years, Mansour highlighted the importance of a stable regulatory environment to sustain positive momentum. Research indicates that bingo halls offer a hidden benefit to players, with a survey revealing that a majority of attendees felt less lonely after participating.
