The head of Butlin’s has expressed concerns about the challenges of controlling prices and announced plans for 250 potential job cuts due to increased costs. Jon Hendry Pickup emphasized the brand’s commitment to providing value for money, a principle established by founder Billy Butlin nearly a century ago.
Acknowledging rising expenses and the potential impact of international conflicts, Pickup highlighted the growing difficulty in maintaining affordability. He also raised concerns about a proposed tourist tax that could force the resort to close for extended periods during term time, affecting families seeking affordable breaks starting at just £39 for a four-night stay.
Speaking to the Mirror on the occasion of Butlin’s 90th anniversary since opening in Skegness in 1936, Pickup reflected on the chain’s evolution from a traditional British seaside destination with multiple camps to its current three remaining resorts. Despite facing competition from inexpensive foreign holidays, Butlin’s has invested significantly in modernizing accommodations and amenities.
Emphasizing the enduring appeal of Butlin’s, Pickup described the resort as a place where families can engage in non-stop fun activities together, offering a break from the distractions of technology. As the resort experiences a surge in Easter bookings driven by last-minute reservations, Pickup noted the trend of late bookings in response to economic uncertainties.
Looking ahead, Butlin’s anticipates hosting 1.5 million guests this year, maintaining occupancy rates and introducing new themed events like the Ultimate 80s weekend. However, escalating operational costs, including increased national insurance contributions and rising minimum wage requirements, have prompted the chain to initiate a consultation process for potential job reductions.
Despite these challenges, Butlin’s remains focused on providing inclusive holiday experiences to cater to various budgets, offering affordable packages such as Showtime mid-week breaks and all-inclusive deals. Pickup expressed concerns about the impact of proposed tourist taxes on families and emphasized the importance of maintaining accessibility for all guests.
