BT has recently announced a crucial update regarding landline services, prompting households reliant on this technology to pay attention. The traditional copper cables that have facilitated communication for over a century are being phased out, with less than a year remaining until the transition is completed by January 31, 2027.
The shift to new digital services, which utilize internet connectivity for making calls, is necessary due to the outdated and overloaded nature of the current copper system. BT’s Digital Voice platform represents the latest advancement, offering enhanced stability, clearer audio quality, call forwarding to mobile devices, and improved call screening capabilities to combat scams and unsolicited marketing.
While over three million UK households have already made the switch to Digital Voice, many more need to follow suit. BT emphasizes the importance of acting promptly, as ignoring communications from the provider could result in disruptions to phone and broadband services as the deadline approaches.
Transitioning to digital landlines is a straightforward process for most, with existing BT handsets compatible with the new system. Maintaining the same phone number and billing structure, customers can simply connect their current home phone to the broadband hub instead of the traditional wall socket. In cases where this setup is not effective, contacting the provider or scheduling an engineer visit may be required.
Customers with special requirements, such as those utilizing telecare devices or pendant alarms, are encouraged to notify their provider promptly to arrange appropriate support. It is crucial for individuals to verify if their landline and home phone are prepared for the upcoming network retirement.
