British Man Missing After Tragic Malta Swim Incident

Following a tragic incident in Malta, a British man is currently missing after an 11-year-old boy lost his life while swimming.

Emergency responders, along with the police and the Civil Protection Department, initiated an extensive search operation at Ramla Bay after the boy encountered difficulties in the water. Despite efforts to rescue him and transport him to the hospital, the boy unfortunately passed away upon arrival.

It remains unclear whether the man and the boy were swimming together when they faced challenges. The Meteorological Office had already forewarned about strong winds affecting Malta at the beginning of the week. Tragically, there have been 16 drowning incidents in the country since the commencement of 2025.

The search for the unidentified man has resumed today. Magistrate Brigitte Sultana is overseeing an inquiry into the recent events, as reported locally.

In a separate incident last month, another British tourist drowned at a renowned location in Malta after sliding into the sea from a pleasure boat.

At the Blue Lagoon in Comino, the 43-year-old man submerged into the turquoise waters. Observant holidaymakers noticed him underwater, brought him to the surface, and administered CPR, but unfortunately, he was later declared deceased at the hospital.

According to a police representative, an investigation has been launched by Magistrate Brigitte Sultana. Prompt action by volunteer first-aiders from Malta’s Emergency Response and Rescue Corps led to the man being transported to Mgarr Harbour in Gozo.

Unfortunately, drowning incidents in Malta are becoming more frequent. Recent cases include the death of a 35-year-old Italian man at the Blue Lagoon in August, and the discovery of a 71-year-old fisherman’s body off the coast of Comino in April.

In another tragic event, a Spanish tourist lost her life after sustaining severe injuries from a propeller while boarding a boat in Comino. The incident occurred in July, resulting in her eventual passing.

Despite being a popular tourist destination, safety concerns persist at the Blue Lagoon, including worries about its natural habitats. The Blue Lagoon’s website reassures visitors of safety measures in place, emphasizing the presence of lifeguards and designated swimming areas for protection.
