British Man Dies in Cape Verde Chair Attack

A British man passed away after being attacked with a chair during a confrontation involving ten locals while vacationing in Cape Verde.

Dean Taylor, a 25-year-old from south-east London, died en route to a local hospital on January 7 following a dispute in the popular tourist area of Santa Maria on Sal Island. Police have detained five men in connection with the death of the sales worker. Authorities mentioned that the victim was engaged in a disagreement with a group of around ten individuals of Cape Verdean descent.

He was subjected to chair strikes, punches, and kicks while on the ground during the altercation. The culprits fled the scene immediately, according to police statements.

His father, Alexander Taylor, also from London, expressed the family’s devastation, stating, “My wife is completely devastated. I’ve got a daughter as well and she’s completely devastated.” He recounted receiving the tragic news from his brother-in-law in Cape Verde while at work on January 8.

The Judicial Police of the country reported that five men, aged between 19 and 35, had been detained following Dean’s demise. The police statement mentioned an incident involving a group of domestic and international individuals that led to the death of a 25-year-old British citizen. The Foreign Office later confirmed Dean’s nationality as British.

Alexander mentioned that Dean had traveled to Cape Verde with three school friends on December 28 and was scheduled to depart the day after the incident. He warned travelers planning to visit Cape Verde to be cautious, emphasizing the need to be vigilant.

The family had to pay 8,500 Euros to repatriate Dean as their travel insurance did not cover such expenses. They are yet to arrange his funeral as his body is still under the coroner’s care. Alexander urged British holidaymakers to exercise caution when visiting Cape Verde.

A spokesperson from the Foreign Office stated, “We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Cape Verde and are in contact with the local authorities.”
