“Beware: O2 Customers in UK Targeted by Deceptive SIM Card Scam”

An urgent warning has been issued to iPhone and Android users by O2, alerting them to a new scam targeting customers in the UK. The fraudulent message being circulated to devices claims that SIM cards are at risk of deactivation due to the alleged failure to accept updated Terms and Conditions. The scam utilizes urgent language and appears to come from an official O2 number, making it harder to detect as fake.

For individuals with O2 SIM cards, it is crucial to be cautious. The deceptive message states, “O2UK: IMPORTANT: Your SIM Card(s) will be inactive on 04/06/2026, because you have NOT signed our Terms and Conditions. Logon to sign.” Alongside the deactivation threat, the message contains a link leading to a counterfeit website aimed at stealing personal information. Scammers may use this data to breach MyO2 accounts and potentially gain access to other online accounts using stolen passwords.

Customers who receive messages regarding their O2 SIM card expiration should refrain from clicking any embedded links. Instead, they should verify the message’s authenticity by accessing their account through the official O2 website or app, or by contacting the network directly.

Murray Mackenzie, Director of Fraud Prevention at Virgin Media O2, highlighted the increasing sophistication of scammers. He emphasized the need for vigilance and prompt action to counteract these fraudulent tactics, urging individuals to report suspicious messages for swift intervention.

O2 has also provided guidance to help customers safeguard themselves:

– O2 does not send texts requesting acceptance of new Terms and Conditions or threatening SIM deactivation.
– Exercise caution with messages using urgent or threatening language to induce quick responses.
– Be wary of unexpected messages from unknown numbers, as genuine O2 communications typically display under a verified “O2” sender name.
– Avoid clicking on links in unsolicited texts; instead, directly access the MyO2 app or call 202 from an O2 phone to verify legitimacy.
– In case of clicking on a suspicious link and providing login details, change your password immediately to secure your account.
