Benefit Claim Delays Risk Pushing Claimants to Poverty

MPs have raised concerns that delays in processing benefit claims could push claimants into poverty, according to a recent report by the Public Accounts Committee. The report highlighted that some individuals are waiting for over a year for their Personal Independence Payment (PIP) claims to be reviewed.

The committee’s findings revealed that in the 2024-25 period, only 51% of PIP claims were processed within 75 working days, falling short of the Department for Work and Pensions’ (DWP) target of 75%. The report emphasized the detrimental impact of prolonged waiting times on claimants, leading to financial difficulties and potential poverty, noting the lack of a sufficient short-term improvement plan by the Department.

Members of the Committee shared instances of constituents enduring lengthy processing times, some exceeding a year, a situation not adequately reflected in the DWP’s statistics. Despite the department’s acknowledgment of the issue, the MPs expressed dissatisfaction with the ongoing delays and their adverse effects on claimants.

Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, Chair of the Public Accounts Committee, criticized the DWP for failing to deliver promised improvements in a timely manner, leaving disability claimants with subpar service. He highlighted the risk of claimants falling into debt or poverty due to the Department’s unresponsive approach.

Among the recommendations outlined by the Committee is a call for the DWP to provide more detailed data on waiting times, including the longest recorded wait in 2024/25. PIP, a crucial disability benefit aimed at assisting with additional living expenses, is essential for individuals both employed and unemployed.

The article also mentioned a significant rebellion within the Labour Party last summer concerning PIP eligibility restrictions, prompting a review led by DWP minister Sir Stephen Timms. The DWP emphasized ongoing efforts to revamp the welfare system and expedite PIP award decisions, with the Timms Review focusing on ensuring fairness and suitability for the future.
