An acclaimed bed and breakfast establishment with an attached café has shut down, dealing a significant blow to the local community. The owner attributed the closure to the challenging location of the business, which struggled to attract passing customers.
The Dove Inn, known for its gluten-free offerings, ceased operations in Alburgh, Norfolk, after a successful two and a half years under the ownership of Sonya Resemblance. The closure reflects the broader crisis facing the hospitality industry in the UK, with numerous establishments shutting down due to escalating costs and evolving consumer behaviors.
For instance, the well-loved White Horse pub in Beaconsfield permanently closed its doors recently, highlighting the financial pressures faced by pub owners. Industry experts had previously warned about the potential decline of pubs, citing substantial cost increases. In the first quarter of 2025 alone, 300 pubs ceased operations.
Despite being recognized as one of the top 50 cafés in the UK at the 2025 Small Business Awards shortly before closing, the Dove Inn struggled to sustain its operations. Sonya Resemblance, who took over the inn in 2023, prided herself on offering a completely gluten-free menu to cater to individuals with dietary restrictions.
In a heartfelt announcement, Sonya expressed gratitude to the community for their support and acknowledged the business’s contributions to job creation, training opportunities, and mental well-being initiatives. Regrettably, the business could not overcome the challenges posed by its location.
The closure announcement followed an earlier warning from the business regarding the difficulties faced in the retail and hospitality sectors. Despite efforts to weather the storm, the business ultimately succumbed to the pressures of the industry.
Despite the outpouring of support from loyal customers, Sonya confirmed the closure on January 16. Messages of sympathy flooded in, underscoring the impact of the inn’s closure on the community.
