The oldest existing artwork by the renowned artist Banksy could soon be available for art enthusiasts, as the building in Bristol where it is located is being prepared for sale. The property, owned by Wellspring Settlement, serves as a vital community center that has been facing financial difficulties, prompting the decision to sell. This building was once home to the ‘Dug Out’ youth club, a place frequented by the enigmatic artist during his early years.
Wellspring Settlement plays a significant role in the Barton Hill neighborhood, offering various services such as baby and toddler play sessions, a food club, financial advice, and social gatherings for adults. Additionally, the center supports youth programs and hosts local charities and groups.
Having nurtured a young Banksy before he rose to fame as the world’s most renowned anonymous artist, the community center’s sale will mark the end of its role in providing a space for Bristol’s youth and offer a piece of art history to any potential buyer. Presently, the large building houses a local amateur boxing club, which will need to relocate once the property changes ownership.
In a heartfelt message to the Barton Hill residents, Wellspring revealed their current financial challenges. Despite the boxing club’s valuable contributions to the community, the costs of maintaining the building surpass the rent received from the club. As a result, the trustees have decided to put the property up for sale to secure the organization’s financial future.
The community has a strong bond with the building, but Wellspring assures its commitment to supporting the boxing club throughout the transition. Efforts are underway to find suitable alternative premises for the club to continue serving local youth. While the changes may pose challenges, the charity remains optimistic about ensuring a positive future for both the organization and the boxing club.
