A bald eagle found trapped at a Brantford, Ont., landfill was rescued by bylaw officers and is now under care at a wildlife rehabilitation center. Chantal Theijin, the wildlife custodian at Hobbitstee Wildlife Refuge, described the eagle as drenched and smelly, likely due to heavy rains in the area. The bird, commonly seen scavenging at the dump, was successfully captured after a challenging rescue operation.
Ian Harrower, supervisor of bylaw compliance in Brantford, led the rescue effort, which involved a team of six people herding the eagle towards safety. Despite the bird’s attempts to evade capture by hopping over obstacles, the officers managed to secure it after around 40 minutes. Fortunately, concerns about a possible broken wing were unfounded, and the eagle was transferred to Hobbitstee for further care.
Theijin mentioned that Hobbitstee regularly cares for eagles and other wildlife, relying on community support for funding. The rescued eagle, currently undergoing treatment, is expected to recover fully within two to four weeks. The bird’s feathers were affected by a mysterious substance, requiring special attention to restore their natural condition.
Theijin noted the eagle’s strong demeanor and hinted at a successful recovery, despite the bird’s intimidating behavior towards caretakers. The wildlife refuge is optimistic about the eagle’s rehabilitation progress, emphasizing the importance of patience and specialized care for the majestic bird.
