“Baby Toy Bought on TikTok Speaks Haunting Words”

A relative who purchased a baby toy for his one-year-old nephew on TikTok was shocked to discover that the toy spoke ten unsettling words. Aaron Green, from Wythenshawe, bought the jellyfish toy for £8.62 in October, intending it as a Christmas gift.

The toy was advertised as an ‘electric dancing jellyfish toy’ with LED lights and music features. Despite the product description not mentioning any audio capability, video footage showed the toy saying, “Live audio now being transmitted to data centre for analysis.”

Following this unexpected revelation, TikTok is currently investigating the toy. The product listing has been removed from the platform, although it remains available on other online retail platforms. Aaron expressed surprise at the toy’s unexpected behavior, emphasizing that it was only meant to dance and play music.

He noted that the toy’s claim of having AI obstacle avoidance seemed unlikely for its low price. Aaron’s sister sent him a video of the toy speaking, saying it repeatedly broadcast the message about live audio analysis and began uttering nonsensical phrases in the same voice.

Expressing concern over the toy’s behavior, Aaron conducted research on its manufacturer, discovering it was produced in China. He highlighted the importance of being cautious when purchasing items online, especially considering the toy’s low cost.

Attempts to revisit the product page were met with a notification stating that the product was no longer available in the region. TikTok has not confirmed whether the toy can record audio but assured that they prioritize customer safety and are investigating the issue.

TikTok mentioned that they have removed the product from their platform while conducting a thorough investigation. They emphasized their commitment to customer safety through seller verification processes, reporting mechanisms, and product review systems, with customers having the option to return items if needed.
