Asda is preparing to launch around 20 new convenience stores later this year. The initial Asda Express store is scheduled to open in Castleford at the beginning of October, with additional openings in various locations following shortly after. These Asda Express outlets will offer up to 3,000 branded and own-label products, including essential items like milk and bread.
The upcoming stores will be situated in urban areas, residential neighborhoods, and transportation hubs. This expansion comes after Asda’s successful acquisition of 469 convenience store and fuel sites from Co-op and EG Group. Asda introduced its first Express store in 2022.
David Lepley, the Chief Supply Chain Officer, expressed excitement about commencing the next phase of the Express rollout. He emphasized the company’s commitment to delivering excellent value across more UK locations. Lepley highlighted Asda’s rapid growth in the convenience store sector, with nearly 500 stores expected by year-end.
Asda also recently announced a £180 million investment to revamp 180 in-store cafes. The upgrades will feature digital ordering screens, table ordering service, and traditional manned tills. A fresh menu will be introduced, including dishes like smashed avocado on toast, katsu chicken curry, salad bowls, wraps, nachos, loaded fries, and a range of pizzas. Customers can look forward to new drink options like flavored iced coffees and a variety of cakes, alongside classic favorites such as full English breakfast and fish and chips.
The cafe refurbishment project, led by partner Compass Group, is slated for completion by the end of October. Asda, which currently operates 205 cafes, assures customers that the popular Kids Eat for £1 promotion will remain available.
