Paris Fashion Week has concluded, but London has kicked off its own fashion showcase, earning accolades from a renowned designer for elevating African fashion to new heights.
The event highlighted distinctive African-inspired clothing by emerging designers, accompanied by Afrobeat music on the runway. Luxury designer Veekee James, a Forbes Under 30 honoree, graced the show at The InterContinental London, Greenwich over the weekend.
Expressing her enthusiasm for the growing attention towards African fashion, Veekee remarked on the global recognition their work is receiving and the advancement of African creativity on a global scale. She eagerly anticipates the recognition of more African talents worldwide.
The day-long affair organized by RAFT X featured a fashion runway, a talent competition akin to X-Factor with a £2,000 cash prize, and networking opportunities for businesses like British-Nigerian food company Puff Puff Ministry.
RAFT X, a newly established annual event dedicated to celebrating arts, culture, and community, drew praise from talent show judge DJ Abass for providing a platform for showcasing African talent and culture, fostering global recognition, much like the evolution of afrobeats music.
The winner of the talent show, spoken-word artist Jessica Edgar, known as Poetess Jess, expressed her gratitude for the recognition and the opportunity to connect with fellow talented individuals at the event.
Radio presenter Lady T, one of the talent show judges, commended the multicultural event for its significant impact in promoting African culture globally and attracting interest from Western designers and influencers seeking inspiration.
Harvesters UK, the organizer of RAFT X, a church that hosts impactful community events, emphasized the beauty and cultural richness of the event in providing a platform for talents to shine. The event’s organizer, Pastor Dayo Ogunrombi, highlighted the importance of nurturing talents and aspirations, aiming to expand the event’s reach and attract more sponsorships in the future.
Plans are in place to host RAFT X at a larger venue next year and engage additional brands and sponsors to enhance the event’s scope and impact.
