“Tragic Mudslide Claims Young Football Fan’s Life”

A mother recounted the most devastating day of her life when authorities informed her about her daughter’s tragic death in a mudslide during a school outing. The inquest into the passing of 10-year-old Leah Harrison revealed that she was swept away while crossing a stream at the Carlton adventure center in North Yorkshire on May 22 the previous year.

Michelle Harrison, Leah’s mother, shared how her daughter, who was enthusiastic about football, joyfully headed to Mount Pleasant Primary School in Darlington, Co Durham, carrying her small suitcase the day before the unfortunate incident. Despite being unwell with tonsillitis leading up to the trip, Leah recovered and eagerly anticipated the outing.

Michelle deliberated on keeping Leah at home due to her illness but ultimately allowed her to go as Leah was determined not to miss the experience. On the morning of the trip, Michelle walked Leah to school, where Leah, proud and excited, carried her suitcase without shedding a tear. Michelle bid her daughter farewell with a kiss and hug, urging her to have a wonderful time.

Reflecting on the tragic day, Michelle expressed that it was the most sorrowful moment of her life when police officers arrived at her door to deliver the devastating news of Leah’s passing. Leah, inspired by England’s Lionesses, aspired to become a professional footballer.

During the inquest, Coroner Paul Appleton disclosed that Leah was struck by a mudslide while crossing the stream, carried downstream, and trapped in the mud, resulting in asphyxiation. Despite rescue efforts, Leah could not be saved. The Health and Safety Executive’s investigation concluded without further actions taken.

The Carlton Adventure center, managed by Hartlepool Borough Council, witnessed unforeseeable weather conditions on the day of the incident, with the senior activity instructor stating that similar conditions were not uncommon. Leah’s family, in a heartfelt statement following her passing, remembered her cheerful demeanor and expressed their deep love for her.

A large-scale rescue operation involving mountain rescue teams was launched to save Leah, and the inquest is ongoing.
