“Buck Martinez to be Inducted into Blue Jays’ Hall of Excellence”

The Toronto Blue Jays are set to honor Buck Martinez, their long-serving broadcaster, by inducting him into the team’s new Hall of Excellence at Rogers Centre this Saturday. Martinez, who recently retired after a distinguished career of over 4,000 games, dedicated nearly four decades to the Blue Jays as a player, manager, and broadcaster.

Expressing his gratitude, Martinez acknowledged the fans for their unwavering support throughout the years, making him feel like part of their extended family. Known for his distinctive broadcasting style featuring phrases like “a swing and a drive” and “get outta here ball,” Martinez credited his time in Milwaukee and the influence of legendary announcer Bob Uecker for shaping his on-air persona.

Reflecting on his transition to retirement, Martinez highlighted the significant change after being actively involved in professional baseball since 1967. Despite intending to participate in the Jays’ 50th season celebrations, health concerns, including a second battle with cancer in 2025 (following an initial diagnosis in 2022), necessitated his departure. However, he joyfully shared that he is now cancer-free and feeling well.

The Hall of Excellence, which will feature exhibits honoring key figures who have impacted the franchise, including players, coaches, builders, and broadcasters, will also include the existing 11 members on the team’s Level of Excellence. These include notable names like Jose Bautista, Joe Carter, and Roy Halladay.

Martinez, who initially felt apprehensive about joining the Blue Jays in 1981, admitted that his perception changed drastically upon witnessing the fervent support for baseball in Toronto. Recalling last year’s World Series as one of the most memorable he’s experienced, he praised the team’s camaraderie and the thrilling Game 7 as defining moments.

In his assessment of the current Jays’ season, Martinez expressed surprise at Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s struggles, emphasizing the challenging nature of the game even for top-tier players.
