Comedian Liz Miele has recently experienced a significant financial setback, echoing the struggles of many others in the industry. SiriusXM made the decision to discontinue its Raw Comedy/Raw Dog channel, which previously showcased over 800 comedians, in favor of a new channel spearheaded by renowned comedian Sebastian Maniscalco.
This move has left Miele and numerous working-class comedians without a crucial source of income and exposure, with established celebrity comedians dominating the airwaves. Miele shared that SiriusXM was a lifeline for her during tough financial times, providing essential support for herself and many fellow comedians facing various challenges.
While Maniscalco and SiriusXM have pledged to offer opportunities for comedians at different career stages, industry advocacy group Stand Up for Standup highlighted a concerning disparity. The group revealed that the rebranded channel featured only 275 comedians last month, with a significant portion of airtime allocated to top-tier artists like Chris Rock, Kevin Hart, and Jim Gaffigan. The shift has led to a concentration of wealth among a select few, depriving a diverse range of comedians of vital royalties and exposure.
Canadian comedian Danish Anwar shared his firsthand experience of the financial impact, noting a significant decrease in earnings following the channel’s overhaul. Many comedians relied on SiriusXM royalties to sustain their careers, with some facing the risk of having to return to Canada due to visa complications.
Notable comedians, including Patton Oswalt and Michelle Wolf, have called on Maniscalco to ensure that emerging comedians have a platform to grow and thrive. Despite Maniscalco distancing himself from the decision to end Raw Comedy, he expressed a commitment to collaborating with SiriusXM to provide opportunities for comedians of all backgrounds.
The current situation has prompted calls for unity and advocacy within the comedy community, emphasizing the need for fair pay and better industry practices. While challenges persist, there is hope for a collective effort to address the financial repercussions faced by many comedians in the wake of these changes.
