Imagine this scenario: You find yourself at Harry Styles’ Together, Together tour, enjoying the music from your seat, when suddenly, the crowd erupts into singing a different song by another artist.
Harry Styles is currently performing his tour at Madison Square Garden in New York City, with 20 shows completed out of the 30-show residency. Fans are known for singing along to Styles’ songs, but a new trend has emerged where they chant the lyrics of 5 Seconds of Summer’s “Telephone Busy” during the instrumental break of Styles’ song “Ready, Steady, Go,” gaining momentum with each passing night.
This trend originated from a fan-made remix on TikTok by user @millsberry75 in March, blending the two songs together. The remix caught the attention of 5 Seconds of Summer, who incorporated it into their DJ set at Salt Shed Chicago during the Lollapalooza festival in August.
The trend has now made its way to Styles’ live performances, with numerous videos on social media showcasing fans joining in. Initially faint in earlier September shows at Madison Square Garden, the chants of 5 Seconds of Summer lyrics have grown louder in recent performances, creating a thunderous response from the audience.
The history between One Direction, where Styles rose to fame, and 5 Seconds of Summer adds to the excitement, with the bands having shared stages in the past. This organic trend evolving from fan enthusiasm for catchy music highlights the power of online communities in shaping real-world trends within fandoms.
5 Seconds of Summer has acknowledged the buzz surrounding the songs, with drummer Ashton Irwin appreciating the fan enthusiasm and the band reposting fan videos of the chants. While Styles has yet to directly address the trend, the increasing volume suggests he might acknowledge it soon.
With numerous upcoming shows, including several at Madison Square Garden and others on the tour schedule, the potential for the trend to escalate further is significant. Fans are eagerly anticipating the continuation of this unique musical crossover at future performances.
