“Crazy Rich Asians” Returns as HBO Series

After eight years since the success of “Crazy Rich Asians” at the box office and its significant impact on Asian representation in Hollywood, the story is making a comeback on screen as an HBO series. The upcoming eight-episode, one-hour drama will continue from where the 2018 film left off. Returning as main cast members are Constance Wu, Henry Golding, and Ronny Chieng, with Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh reprising her role as a recurring character. Production is scheduled to commence in 2027.

Adapted from Kevin Kwan’s bestselling novels, the series will be overseen by Adele Lim, who co-wrote the original film. Joining Lim are Kevin Kwan, director Jon M. Chu, and producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson as executive producers. The collaboration for the series will be between HBO and Warner Bros. Television.

Adele Lim, in a statement, expressed excitement about the series, highlighting that the eight episodes will allow for a deeper exploration of characters and settings, although specific storylines from the books have not been revealed yet.

The film “Crazy Rich Asians” follows the story of Rachel (played by Constance Wu), a New York economics professor, who embarks on a journey to Singapore with her boyfriend, Nick (played by Henry Golding), only to discover his affiliation with one of the wealthiest families in the country. Michelle Yeoh portrays Nick’s formidable mother, Eleanor, while Ronny Chieng plays his cousin Eddie.

The announcement of the series marks a long-anticipated continuation of the beloved characters from the film. Director Jon M. Chu humorously confirmed the return of the sequel, echoing a famous line from the movie character Goh Peik Lin, portrayed by Awkwafina.

The original “Crazy Rich Asians” movie was a groundbreaking moment upon its release, featuring the first all-Asian cast in a major Hollywood production since “The Joy Luck Club” in 1993. The romantic comedy, made with a reported budget of $30 million US, grossed over $239 million US and became the top-grossing Hollywood studio romantic comedy at the North American box office in nearly a decade.

Toronto entertainment blogger Will Wong, who attended the 2018 premiere of the film, expressed his excitement for the reunion with the characters, likening it to catching up with old friends. He emphasized the importance of continuing to tell diverse stories in the entertainment industry to provide opportunities for Asian talent and break existing barriers.
