“Trial of Lindsay Clancy Sparks Maternal Mental Health Debate”

CONTENT WARNING: This article includes information regarding violence against children and suicide.

Supporters of Lindsay Clancy have gathered outside the Massachusetts courtroom where she is standing trial for the deaths of her three children. While Clancy admits to the killings, the jury is tasked with determining her criminal responsibility.

Prior to the closing arguments, Clancy’s supporters, primarily women, donned pink attire once more, echoing the sentiment seen in their previous gatherings and online discussions that new mothers require more support that they are currently receiving.

“As a physician, I’ve witnessed the dismissal of women’s concerns firsthand, and it’s unjust,” expressed supporter Marta Quijano to The Associated Press outside the Plymouth County Superior Court in Plymouth, Mass., on Thursday.

Danielle Buckley, who traveled five hours from Maine to witness the closing arguments, emphasized, “They just want to see her be punished for what happened to her children.”

Clancy, aged 36, stands accused of killing her three children in 2023 while her then-husband was away. The court heard that Clancy used exercise bands to strangle Cora, 5; Dawson, 3; and eight-month-old Callan in the basement of their Duxbury home. Following the act, she attempted suicide by leaping from a second-floor window, resulting in paralysis.

Clancy’s defense does not contest the killings but argues that she is not criminally responsible due to her bipolar disorder and postpartum psychosis, a mental health condition that can distort a new mother’s perception of reality.

Prosecutors maintain that Clancy orchestrated the killings by luring her husband out of the house. After the conclusion of the closing arguments in the month-long trial, the jury began their deliberations.

If convicted, Clancy may face life imprisonment without parole. If found not guilty due to lack of criminal responsibility or by reason of insanity, she could be committed to a state psychiatric facility.
