Dolly Parton generously donated millions of books to children worldwide through her Imagination Library, a program she considered a great honor. Chaya Kulkarni, a member of the book selection committee and director at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, emphasized that Parton’s motivation stemmed from a deep personal connection and childhood experiences.
Parton, who passed away at the age of 80, received accolades for her contributions as a music and cultural icon, as well as a philanthropist. Since its inception in 1995, the Imagination Library has distributed over 300 million books globally, with five million distributed in Canada and over 730,000 in 2025 alone. Eligible children receive a complimentary book monthly until they turn five.
The program, initiated in honor of Parton’s illiterate father, remains a testament to her commitment. Her family requested donations to the Imagination Library in lieu of flowers, with assurances from the program of continued book distribution.
Kulkarni reflected on Parton’s character, highlighting her kindness, humility, and dedication to inspiring others across various platforms. The Imagination Library’s impact extends beyond national borders, reaching children in countries like Australia, the UK, and Ireland.
Communities must join the program to provide funding for book collections, allowing registered families to receive monthly books addressed to the child. The carefully curated selection includes award-winning books, with a focus on Canadian authors and illustrators, as well as stories reflecting Indigenous cultures.
Parton’s engaging storytelling and genuine connection with children have left a lasting impression. Families can access recordings of her reading stories, further enhancing the program’s impact on young readers. Parton’s legacy lies in the millions of children who have developed a love for stories through her initiative.
Reflecting on Parton’s remarkable legacy, Kulkarni emphasized the enduring gift of storytelling that she bestowed upon millions of children, underscoring the privilege of being part of such a meaningful endeavor.
