More than 2,500 individuals have lost their lives in the Ebola crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with the outbreak rapidly expanding across an area larger than France, as reported by senior United Nations Ebola co-ordinator Julien Harneis on Friday. Harneis, speaking from the northeastern Congolese city of Bunia via video call, emphasized the urgent need for additional assistance, highlighting that the current funding reserves are expected to deplete within a matter of weeks.
Local health workers have been facing hostility and aggression from residents affected by the outbreak, leading to instances where these workers have contracted the disease and succumbed to it, Harneis added.
A recent development involves the allocation of a vaccine designed for a different strain of Ebola to the D.R.C. The country had requested doses from the global Ebola virus disease vaccine stockpile the previous week. The vaccine, known as Ervebo, is authorized for preventing the Zaire Ebola virus strain but will now undergo a late-stage trial using 20,000 out of the 70,000 allocated shots to assess its efficacy against the current Bundibugyo virus.
The World Health Organization stressed the importance of clinical trials to determine if Ervebo offers protection against the Bundibugyo virus in humans, as the latter strain lacks approved vaccines or treatments.
In late July, the D.R.C. experienced its worst Ebola epidemic to date, surpassing the previous outbreak between 2018 and 2020 in terms of case numbers. The current crisis is caused by the Bundibugyo Ebola species, posing significant challenges due to the absence of approved remedies.
Harneis warned of the exponential growth of the outbreak, stressing that it is outpacing the response efforts in an area larger than France, compounded by three decades of conflict and resulting in substantial humanitarian needs.
Health-care workers have been severely impacted, with 160 falling ill from Ebola, leading to 43 fatalities. Harneis highlighted the alarming attacks on health workers and facilities by hostile individuals, further complicating the containment efforts.
Conspiracy theories circulating among locals have exacerbated the situation, with some believing the outbreak to be a hoax, leading to violent reactions when health protocols restrict personal involvement in burials. Attacks on health workers have surged in the past six months, resulting in eight fatalities and over 260 incidents, creating a perilous environment for those combating Ebola.
Challenges also include reduced aid resources in recent years, limiting the capabilities of humanitarian organizations. Moreover, logistical hurdles, such as disruptions in banking services due to halted commercial flights, have hindered the payment process for the numerous individuals engaged in combating the outbreak.
