“Chum Salmon Migration Surges, Concerns Persist”

Since mid-July, Fisheries and Oceans Canada has reported that approximately one million chum salmon have migrated into the Yukon River from the Bering Sea. Despite this surge, experts suggest that this uptick does not necessarily indicate a positive trajectory for this specific salmon species.

In 2020, a significant decline in chum salmon numbers was documented, causing concern among researchers. Sebastian Jones, a wildlife analyst at the Yukon Conservation Society, expressed unease over the fluctuations, highlighting the limited understanding of these ecosystems.

Notably, the proportion of Canadian-origin salmon among the returning fish stands at around 12%, below the typical range of 20 to 30%. Despite this low figure, Jones acknowledged an improvement compared to recent years, with hopes for 100,000 chum salmon to cross the border this year, a substantial increase from last year’s 25,000.

Although progress is evident, Jones emphasized that the current numbers fall short of the ideal range of 150,000 to 250,000 chum salmon returning to the Yukon. Stephanie Peacock, a scientist at the Pacific Salmon Foundation, underscored the importance of chum salmon as a vital nutrient source late in the fall, alongside chinook salmon, the other returning species in the region.

Both species have experienced declines over time, with chinook salmon showing a gradual decrease since the 1990s and chum salmon facing a more abrupt decline in recent years, raising concerns among experts. Investigations are ongoing into the Bering Sea ecosystem, where these salmon originate, to understand the impact of changes such as rising water temperatures and increased industrial fishing activities.

While a sense of optimism is present, Peacock urged caution, stressing the need to address the long-term decline and the ongoing challenges faced by Yukon chum salmon. The complex interplay of environmental factors underscores the importance of continued monitoring and conservation efforts to ensure the sustainability of these vital salmon populations.
