NASA and Katalyst Space Technologies have decided to abandon the mission to save the Swift Observatory, leading to its eventual re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere later this year. The decision comes following issues with controlling the Link spacecraft, which was intended to rescue the telescope by boosting it to a higher orbit.
Despite NASA’s $30 million investment in Katalyst for the rescue mission, the Swift Observatory will now face a fiery end after more than two decades of observing significant cosmic events such as gamma ray bursts and exploding stars. The rescue spacecraft encountered difficulties shortly after its launch in July, with problems persisting in its orbit positioning and control.
While the outcome was not as hoped, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman emphasized the importance of attempting the mission. Katalyst will continue to operate the Link spacecraft in proximity to the telescope to showcase its capabilities for potential future rescue missions.
The Swift Observatory, launched in 2004, had its scientific instruments deactivated earlier this year to slow its descent. The telescope, currently orbiting at 345 kilometers above Earth, was intended to be lifted back to its original orbit of 600 kilometers for extended cosmic observations.
The unsuccessful rescue of the Swift Observatory raises concerns about the fate of the aging Hubble Space Telescope, which may require a similar orbital boost due to the sun’s heightened activity causing it to lose altitude. The future of the Hubble remains uncertain following the setback with the Swift mission.
