Syrians demonstrated this week to demand justice for the passing of Mohammad Ghamira, a Syrian man who succumbed in a hospital after purported mistreatment by security forces while in custody. This incident occurred less than two years after the new government promised to end the prevalent arbitrary detentions and abuse that characterized the previous regime.
Ghamira, a 29-year-old father of two, suffered from hemophilia, a genetic disorder impairing blood clotting, as per his family. He spent three days in detention before his release on Aug. 9 and immediate transfer to the hospital, where he passed away a week later.
The death of Ghamira has become a crucial test for Syria’s new government to demonstrate its commitment to accountability following the fall of the long-standing Assad regime. Ghamira, a former volunteer with the White Helmets, was detained over an alleged theft accusation by the Latakia Internal Security Command. His family had informed authorities about his hemophilia condition and urged against any physical harm during his custody, yet he was reportedly struck while detained.
Following his release, Ghamira passed away at Latakia University Hospital. Syria’s Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management mourned his demise, attributing it to complications from hemorrhaging resulting from the alleged abuse during detention.
An investigation into Ghamira’s death has been initiated by Syria’s Interior Ministry, leading to the detention of seven ministry personnel for questioning. The committee investigating the case revealed that a police interrogator had assaulted Ghamira, leading to his fatal complications.
