Serita Thurton netted two goals in the first half as the bottom-ranked Calgary Wild pulled off a surprising 4-3 victory over the top-seeded Ottawa Rapid in Northern Super League action at McMahon Stadium over the weekend.
Kahli Johnson opened the scoring for the hosts in the 15th minute, followed by Thurton doubling the lead around 13 minutes later.
Ottawa’s Jung Min-Young found the back of the net in the 38th minute, and Melanie Forbes equalized 2-2 just before halftime.
Thurton struck again just before the break, securing her brace and propelling the Wild to victory.
Jorian Baucom also contributed a goal for the Wild, who now have a record of two wins, 12 losses, and two draws.
Jyllissa Harris converted a penalty in the 86th minute for the Rapid, who now stand at 10 wins, three losses, and three draws, ending their 10-game unbeaten run.
Despite holding 54% of possession, the Rapid were outshot 16-13 (9-6 on target). The Wild earned six of the game’s 11 corners, while Ottawa received one yellow card and one red card.
In another match, Jessica De Filippo scored in the 57th minute to level the game and then added a decisive goal five minutes into stoppage time to guide the Vancouver Rise to a 2-1 triumph over the Halifax Tides at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C.
Jordyn Rhodes had put the fourth-placed Tides ahead 1-0 in the 19th minute.
The Rise, in fifth place, dominated possession with 56% and outshot the Tides 18-13, including 6-4 on target.
The Tides took four out of the six corners in the game, while the Rise received two of the three yellow cards issued.
