“Deadly Airstrikes and Wildfires in Lebanon”

LISTEN | FRONT BURNER:

Over the weekend, airstrikes conducted by Israel resulted in the deaths of at least 11 individuals in southern Lebanon, as confirmed by the nation’s health ministry. This incident marked the deadliest assault since a fragile truce was established in June to cease hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, notwithstanding the ongoing attacks.

Amidst the airstrikes and drone strikes, inhabitants and emergency responders in the area have accused Israeli military forces of deliberately initiating wildfires that have been devastating homes, forests, and olive orchards across the conflict-ridden region.

This situation has instilled fear among the local population regarding their ability to remain in the area and the uncertain prospects of hundreds of thousands of individuals displaced by the conflict ever being able to come back.

Will Christou, a correspondent for The Guardian stationed in Beirut, has been covering the wildfires and the wider Israeli operations in southern Lebanon.
