A recent study revealed that flight attendants and pilots face a higher risk of radiation-related cancers compared to individuals working with radioactive materials. Cosmic radiation, originating from space, poses a greater exposure risk to individuals operating at high altitudes.
The study, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, analyzed national data from over 12 million death certificates, focusing on cancer deaths associated with radiation exposure such as leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and various other cancer types. Among more than 500 occupations, flight attendants exhibited the highest percentage of radiation-related cancer deaths, followed by pilots. The odds of dying from radiation-related cancers were notably elevated for both groups.
Contrary to cancers not linked to radiation exposure, flight attendants and pilots did not display elevated death rates, indicating that occupational radiation exposure plays a significant role in the observed excess mortality. The study challenges the assumption that flight crews’ increased skin cancer risk stems from extended layovers in sunny destinations, suggesting that cockpit environments may contribute more significantly to cancer risks.
Flight attendants had approximately 50% higher odds of succumbing to radiation-related cancers compared to the general working population, while pilots had around 36% higher odds. Despite certain study limitations, including the inability to quantify specific radiation exposure levels for each individual, the research emphasizes the need for heightened awareness and monitoring of radiation exposure risks faced by aircrews.
The study authors highlighted the importance of addressing potential contributors such as circadian disruption and UV-A light exposure, which can exacerbate cancer risks in these professions. The Federal Aviation Administration’s acknowledgment of radiation exposure among aircrews underscores the necessity for comprehensive measures to mitigate occupational hazards.
