A woman from Prince George speculates that she might be the inspiration behind Dolly Parton’s iconic song ‘Jolene.’ Juline Whelan encountered the singer in 1972, fitting the description of the young girl whom Parton claims influenced the title of the famous track.
Parton recounted in a 2008 interview with the Norwegian TV show ‘Lydverket’ that she derived the name ‘Jolene’ from a young fan she had met early in her career, captivated by the girl’s red hair, green eyes, and fair complexion.
Whelan, now reflecting on the encounter, recalls meeting Parton in 1972, just before the recording of ‘Jolene.’ At the age of 10, she attended a country music concert with her family at Disneyland, where she approached Parton for an autograph, impressed by the singer’s song ‘Coat of Many Colors.’
