Thousands of individuals were still awaiting assistance on Flores island in Indonesia on Monday, following a strong earthquake that resulted in a minimum of 68 fatalities, over 200 injuries, and significant damage to numerous structures. Many residents were mourning the victims and anticipating aid in communities that were still inaccessible due to the earthquake’s impact.
The earthquake caused extensive destruction, with buildings collapsing onto vehicles, homes being reduced to rubble, and roads being obstructed by debris. Rasyid Jafar, a local clothing trader in the most affected area of Reo, expressed the urgent need for essential supplies such as food, medicine, and clean water.
President Prabowo Subianto, during Indonesia’s Independence Day ceremony, requested prayers for those affected by the disasters in East Nusa Tenggara and elsewhere in the country. The earthquake, which struck with a depth of 10 kilometers in East Nusa Tenggara province early Saturday morning, damaged over 4,500 homes, displaced 19,000 individuals, and left 213 people injured, according to the National Disaster Management Agency. Health facilities, schools, and places of worship were also significantly impacted by the disaster.
Authorities reported 1,576 aftershocks as of Monday, with around 50 of them felt by residents. The governor of the province declared a 14-day state of emergency on Sunday to address the crisis.
Thousands of people on Flores island sought refuge outside their damaged homes, sleeping under makeshift tents to avoid potential aftershocks. The region witnessed widespread devastation, including blocked roads, landslides, and severely damaged structures. Military and police teams have been dispatched to provide aid, with logistical challenges hindering relief efforts in some severely affected areas.
Aid workers successfully reached Palue Island, near the earthquake’s epicenter, after facing challenging conditions due to landslides. The journey was described as perilous, with roads blocked and steep terrains. Efforts are ongoing to provide assistance to the isolated residents in urgent need.
The earthquake’s impact serves as a reminder of Indonesia’s susceptibility to seismic activities due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an area known for volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. The country has experienced devastating earthquakes and tsunamis in the past, highlighting the importance of preparedness and response measures in such disaster-prone regions.
