“Céline Dion Opens Up About Rare Health Struggles”

Céline Dion is getting ready for her upcoming five-week residency in Paris and has shared more information about her health struggles and treatment. The renowned Canadian singer revealed in an exclusive interview with Harper’s Bazaar that she experienced symptoms of stiff person syndrome for 17 years before being officially diagnosed with the rare neurological autoimmune disorder in 2022.

The pain she endured, especially worsening in 2020, was so intense that on some days, she found it difficult to walk and had to rely on a high dose of Valium for relief. Stiff person syndrome is a progressive condition that tends to worsen over time and affects only a small proportion of the population, about one or two individuals per million. Symptoms include muscle stiffness and painful spasms triggered by stress, loud noises, or sudden movements. There is no known cause or approved treatment specifically for the disorder, but various therapies can help manage the symptoms.

Before receiving her diagnosis, Céline Dion would often attribute show cancellations to minor issues like coughs or sinus infections to conceal the true extent of her pain from her fans. Following her diagnosis, she made the decision to cancel all her remaining shows. Although she hasn’t performed publicly since the 2024 Paris Olympics, she is gearing up for her return to the stage in September.

In her efforts to recover, Dion has been diligently following a rigorous regimen that involves medication, physical therapy, vocal therapy, and immunotherapy. Additionally, she has been participating in 90-minute Pilates sessions three times a week and attending ballet classes twice a week to prepare for her upcoming performances.

Described as someone who is constantly in motion and hesitant to remain still for too long for fear of experiencing stiffness, Dion views her recovery and the opportunity to perform again as a miraculous gift that she deeply appreciates. She expressed feelings of strength, excitement, and slight nervousness but affirmed her readiness to make a comeback. Dion’s Paris residency, featuring 26 concerts scheduled between September 12 and May 29 next year, signifies her return to the spotlight after a period of health challenges and treatment.
