A Food Basics store will replace a Metro grocery store in Ottawa’s South Keys neighborhood this fall, leading to job losses for several employees. Metro Inc. stated that the decision to convert the store was made to better cater to customer needs in the area, considering factors like local market conditions and store performance.
The news came as a surprise to employees at the Southgate Metro, with one long-time worker expressing shock at the abrupt closure announcement. The company cited financial pressures, including increased rent and the store’s profitability, as reasons for the conversion. Despite inquiries about the impact of rent on the decision, Metro emphasized that the change was primarily driven by market conditions and customer demands.
The Southgate Metro employed 72 individuals who, according to their collective agreement, cannot transfer to other Metro locations. Those interested in working at the new Food Basics store are encouraged to apply for available positions, with priority given to former Southgate Metro employees as per the collective agreement terms.
Although the union negotiated ‘enhanced options’ for affected workers, including job opportunities at the new store and improved severance benefits, some employees voiced concerns about the transition. The uncertainty of job prospects and potential repercussions, especially for employees like meat cutters who may not have equivalent roles at Food Basics, has left many feeling unsettled.
Amidst these changes, customers also expressed disappointment at the store closure, highlighting concerns about worker treatment and corporate profit motives. The union’s involvement in advocating for members’ rights and exploring legal avenues to challenge the company’s decisions reflects ongoing tensions between labor interests and corporate actions in such situations.
