Nick Reiner, accused of murdering his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, has been denied access to a $1.5 million trust fund he sought for his legal defense. Court documents revealed that Reiner had petitioned for funds from a trust his parents set up for him in 1993.
Trustees rejected Reiner’s request, citing the “slayer statute” in California law, which bars individuals who have intentionally killed someone from inheriting money or property from the deceased. Rob Reiner, a renowned director, and actor, and his wife Michele were fatally stabbed at their California home on December 14, 2025. Nick Reiner, their son, was arrested hours later.
Charged with murder on July 20, the 32-year-old has entered a plea of not guilty. The indictment, unveiled by a Los Angeles County grand jury, alleges that Reiner ambushed his parents. This, along with other factors, raises the possibility of facing the death penalty, pending a decision from District Attorney Nathan Hochman.
Scheduled for a pretrial hearing in September, Reiner is currently represented by public defender Kimberly Greene. The petition highlighted that apart from the family trust fund, individual trust funds were established for the Reiner children, with Nick entitled to portions at specific ages.
Despite claiming he never received the funds due at 30, Reiner asserted his legal right to access the money. The trust fund, totaling at least $1.5 million US, was subject to disputes over legal fees, prompting the departure of high-profile attorney Alan Jackson from the case.
Legal proceedings have been hindered by uncertainties surrounding Reiner’s criminal case. The trust fund remains inaccessible until clarity is achieved on potential implications from the “slayer statute” principles. Motives behind the tragedy remain undisclosed even eight months post the incident.
