“Russian Anti-War Party Defies Authorities, Gains Popular Support”

The head of the sole anti-war party in Russia affirmed his commitment to staying in the country and advocating for change, despite escalating pressure from the authorities that resulted in the party’s disqualification from the upcoming parliamentary elections. The Supreme Court decision to exclude the post-Soviet liberal party Yabloko from the September elections was based on concerns that its stance on ending the ongoing war in Ukraine was resonating with voters.

Nikolai Rybakov, the party leader, emphasized that the support from the people was paramount, surpassing the court’s ruling. Following the verdict, hundreds of supporters gathered outside the court chanting “shame,” underscoring the public backing for Yabloko.

Once a prominent voice in parliament and a government critique, Yabloko now holds only a few regional seats and lacks representation in the State Duma, where the Putin-aligned United Russia party dominates. Despite United Russia’s anticipated victory in the upcoming elections, Rybakov expressed confidence that Yabloko would pose a stronger challenge if permitted to participate.

Yabloko is challenging the Supreme Court’s decision, which alleged undisclosed campaign support from Western entities, among other accusations that the party denies.

Rybakov, a 47-year-old opposition figure, remains resolute in his decision to remain in Russia despite stringent censorship laws and wartime regulations that have prompted many dissenting voices to flee or face legal consequences. He stressed the importance of effecting change from within the country, rejecting any plans to leave.

While gauging public opposition to the war is challenging due to government restrictions on dissent, a decline in support for Russian military actions in Ukraine has been noted, with 66% approval in July, the lowest since February 2022, according to the Levada Center.

Yabloko’s concise manifesto advocating for peace and a democratic Russia has garnered significant support, reflecting a widespread desire within Russian society to end the war. Rybakov highlighted the growing number of supporters aligning with Yabloko’s vision, emphasizing the inability of authorities to suppress the shared sentiments of millions of people.

Social media platforms have witnessed a surge in videos endorsing Yabloko, featuring individuals holding apples as a symbol of support or dancing to Russian tunes referencing apples, indicating a grassroots backing for the party’s message.
