“Rare Arctic Plant Discovery Raises Concerns of Invasive Species”

Plant enthusiast Klaus Koehler made a unique discovery while exploring the Sylvia Grinnell Territorial Park near Iqaluit in July. He stumbled upon a plant species rarely seen in the Arctic, known as bladderwort, highlighting potential implications for invasive species in Northern regions as temperatures rise.

Koehler found the brownish bladderwort plant in a pond, describing it as inconspicuous to the untrained eye but recognizable to those familiar with it. This carnivorous plant is adorned with small black bladders containing partially digested flies, typically found in more temperate climates and seldom reaching the tundra.

The only prior sighting of bladderwort in the area dates back to 2012 when scientists discovered samples near Kimmirut, approximately 120 kilometers southwest of Iqaluit. During subsequent Arctic expeditions, the team identified over 30 new plant species in the region.

Koehler believes this discovery could indicate a shifting climate, noting the increasing presence of non-native plants in the Arctic due to milder conditions. He anticipates changes in the local ecosystem, with longer vegetation periods and the potential expansion of both invasive and native species into the Arctic.

Paul Sokoloff, a senior research assistant at Ottawa’s Museum of Nature, shares Koehler’s concerns. He warns of the risk posed by invasive species entering the Arctic ecosystem through various means, such as bird migration and human activities. Sokoloff stresses the importance of preventing invasive plants from outcompeting native species, citing the example of phragmites in Ontario.

While Koehler’s find may not have immediate adverse effects, Sokoloff highlights the threat posed by other potential invaders. A study by Norwegian University of Science and Technology researchers identified over 2,500 species capable of encroaching on Arctic habitats, jeopardizing native flora.

To further study the bladderwort and its implications, Koehler plans to submit a sample to the Museum of Nature for analysis. This collaborative effort aims to enhance scientific understanding of the plant’s northward expansion amidst changing environmental conditions.
