“Filmmaker Matt Johnson Unveils Biopic ‘Tony’ on Anthony Bourdain”

Canadian filmmaker Matt Johnson appeared relaxed and casual as he discussed his upcoming movie “Tony,” a biopic focusing on the early life of renowned chef and TV personality Anthony Bourdain. Despite the public’s adoration of Bourdain following his tragic passing in 2018, Johnson expressed a lack of prior attachment to the chef’s persona. The decision to create a film on Bourdain only came about after meeting actor Dominic Sessa, who plays the lead role in the movie.

The script for “Tony” draws inspiration from Bourdain’s book “Kitchen Confidential,” condensing anecdotes from his youth into a narrative set during one summer in Provincetown, Mass. Johnson and Sessa intentionally avoided delving deep into Bourdain’s extensive body of work to maintain an authentic portrayal of the young chef’s uncertainties and fears as he embarked on his culinary journey.

By focusing on Bourdain’s formative years, the film sidesteps the pressure of replicating the established figure that many fans revere. Johnson highlighted that the storyline delves into the complexities of Bourdain’s upbringing, his relationships, and his transition into adulthood, offering a more relatable and humanized perspective of the chef.

The collaborative effort between Johnson, Sessa, and the spirit of Bourdain aims to resonate with audiences who idolize the late chef. “Tony” is scheduled for theatrical release in Canada on August 14, inviting viewers to experience a unique portrayal of Bourdain’s early life on screen.
