At least 10 individuals sustained injuries in an incident involving piranha attacks while they were swimming in a popular river that draws numerous visitors.
Photographs depicting victims with bandages soaked in blood covering wounds on their feet emerged following the incident at the Paraguacu River in Iacu, located in the northeastern state of Bahia, Brazil.
After the attacks on Sunday, local authorities decided to close off the river to swimmers and put up warning signs about the risks associated with the fish. Additionally, a detailed study will be conducted to better understand piranha behavior in the area.
Known for their powerful jaws and razor-sharp teeth, piranhas possess one of the strongest bites among bony fishes. A riverside kiosk selling refreshments and snacks stated, “As soon as the first incidents of attacks on swimmers occurred, we provided assistance and guided them to the nearest medical facility.”
The kiosk also informed customers under rented umbrellas or in the water about the hazards of staying in the river and closed early due to the events. They expressed willingness to assist and temporarily suspended their umbrella service until more information is available on the cause of the attacks.
An environmental specialist mentioned to a local TV station that encountering piranhas in the Paraguacu River is common, but attacks on humans are infrequent and could be related to elevated temperatures causing stress to the fish.
Most of the injured individuals from the Sunday incident suffered wounds on their feet and ankles. The location where the attacks took place attracts up to 2,000 visitors daily on weekends and holidays.
In a separate incident last year, a seven-month-old infant was among those harmed after being bitten by piranhas at a resort along the Amazon River in Brazil. The baby reportedly lost part of a toe during the attacks.
Tragically, in another incident, a toddler lost her life in a piranha attack after accidentally falling into a river near her home in Brazil. The two-year-old girl was consumed by the predatory fish shortly after falling into the water.
The Paraguacu River, stretching 310 miles from the Chapada Diamantina highlands to its mouth at the Baia de Todos os Santos, is the largest river entirely within Bahia state.
