“£850M in Benefits Wrongly Paid After Recipients’ Deaths”

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) mistakenly paid out £850 million in benefits to recipients after their deaths due to various reasons. These overpayments occurred when notifications of deaths were received late or coincided with scheduled benefit payments.

Factors contributing to overpayments include hospitalization or residing in a care facility where the NHS or local authority covers expenses, leading to continued benefit disbursements. Specific details of the overpaid benefits remain undisclosed, but reports suggest a mix of mental health, out-of-work benefits, state pensions, and others.

An investigation revealed that since 2021, 2.6 million errors have transpired, with less than half of the £850 million recovered thus far. The DWP emphasized its commitment to recovering debts deemed reasonable and cost-effective, urging individuals who have recently lost family members to utilize the Tell us Once service for streamlined notification processes.

Following a recent grant of enhanced bank account verification powers, the DWP can now mandate financial institutions to verify claimants’ eligibility by scrutinizing account details. This scrutiny includes monitoring savings amounts and overseas expenditures to ensure compliance with benefit regulations. Despite these measures, the DWP cannot access real-time transaction details or make benefit decisions solely based on bank account data.

In cases of identified issues, financial institutions alert the DWP for further investigation, emphasizing that benefit determinations do not solely rely on bank account data. Additionally, the DWP may directly recoup owed funds from claimants’ bank accounts without requiring a court order in specific scenarios.
